BVI 2016 - Part 2

They say the Baths are the number one tourist attraction in the British Virgin Islands. We were skeptical as we thought it would be hyped up and overly busy but we decided to give it a try nonetheless. Best decision ever! The baths were spectacular! We snorkeled along all the natural rock formations and went into a few of the rock openings to explore the caves they created. My brother and I climbed all over the big boulders and I ended up with blisters on my feet cause the stones were so hot! Needless to say, if you are ever in the area, do not miss this stop!

Our next favourite place (we have many favourite places in the BVI as it truly is spectacular) was Norman Island. We spent a few days here, anchored in the Bight. One of the top spots is definitely the caves at Treasure Point.  One cache of “Blackbeard the Pirate’s” treasure was found in the largest of these caves. This hidden treasure was found many, many years ago by a fisherman, who was taking refuge inside the cave from a hurricane. You can still hear detonations from time to time as treasure hunters are still looking for some of Blackbeard’s lost treasure.  Not all has been found as per his manifest, which sadly stated how many cache’s there were but not their location. We got to snorkel into the caves, which was awesome! One downside, as it is a major tourist destination, is that it was really busy.

From here we went over to the Indians, four rocks with amazing snorkeling! We saw hawksbill turtles and an eel, among loads of other fish.

We had drinks at an old ship that has been turned into a bar called Willy T’s, located in the Bight. Pretty much seemed to be a place where everyone comes to get trashed and then jump off the top of the boat. We stayed for about 2 drinks and then left as it became a lot busier. We popped open a bottle of champagne to belatedly celebrate with my brother for his graduation. Thanks to the weak Rand this is the most expensive piece of paper ever obtained by anyone in our family. We went to dinner at a restaurant on the beach at the Bight to continue the celebrations. The food was spectacular! Congratulations Joshua we are proud of you. Good luck for the next one!!

It is approaching time to leave the BVI and say goodbye to my brother so we decided to do one last stop to dive the wreck of the RMS Rhone – a royal mail steamship that sank in 1867 as a result of a hurricane. My brother and mom dived the wreck, and I snorkeled it. My dad stayed on the boat as he had cut his toes open on some coral at the Baths and they were not healed yet. The wreck was really cool, but the water was quite choppy, making snorkeling a little difficult. It was now time to check out and make our way to the U.S. Virgin Islands.

We had the worst experience checking in St. Johns with the U.S. Customs and were so glad to finally get out of there. It put us off so much we left St. John straight away and headed to St. Thomas.  We stopped in at Christmas Bay for two nights were we collected the two paddle board’s that we had bought from a charter company. We went into the Crown Bay Marina during a torrential downpour that saw us all getting soaked as we tied up.  We stayed there for a few days. My brother left from here to go back to Australia.  It was a sad day or two on Jangles getting used to not having Josh aboard. We are currently still in St. Thomas, as there was some bad weather. We did a little bit of exploring and we went to the only ice bar in the Caribbean. We only lasted 20 minutes in the freezing icebox before we had to go outside.

We did some provisioning today and are heading off to the Spanish Virgin Islands tomorrow and then Puerto Rico from there.
